Stone Faces

In order to capture a record of the unusual figurative stone carvings around the outside of St Mary’s church, North Marston, club chairman, John Spargo, photographed them and set the slide show to music for future generations. The stone is badly weathering, and many of the carvings have deteriorated beyond recognition, but some are sufficiently clear to show the skill, artistry ….and cost…associated with these 15th century examples  of the stone masons’ craft. The last few slides show North Marston’s  “scratch dials” or “mass dials” used by priests in medieval times to measure the span of time between masses. To see the slideshow, click here.
